For manufacturers, effective and compliant MSDS management encompasses the process of collecting and maintaining MSDS from vendors and suppliers as well as creating and maintaining MSDS for products they manufacture. Distributors must collect and maintain the MSDS of all products they purchase and resell. The basis for this requirement is outlined in Hazard Communication Standard, 29 CFR § 1910.1200 .The purpose of this section is to ensure that the hazards of all chemicals produced or imported are evaluated, and that information concerning their hazards is transmitted to employers and employees. This transmittal of information is to be accomplished with the supplying of an MSDS.  Employers must maintain copies of any MSDS’ that are received with incoming shipments of hazardous chemicals or shall obtain a MSDS as soon as possible for hazardous chemicals received without a MSDS. If an employee requests an MSDS, the employer shall ensure that the MSDS(s) are readily available.
